Structure of optical fiber connector(In this case an SC-type)
Inside the connector, the bare fiber (125 im), is glued into the ferrule, .
The ferrule is a precise ceramic tube with very narrow tolerances.
After glueing the fiber into the ferrule, the fiber endface is polished to ensure optimal endface quality. This is the most delicate part of every optical connector.
The other parts of the connector are there to release strain from the remaining cable parts and foradjusting the ferrule to minimal attenuation.
For the SC types, there are four positions the ferrule can be fixed related to the key on the connectorhousing. After assembly of the connector the position of the fiber is fixed and the key will make sure, the user can only place the connectors in one way into the coupling device or any other interface.
The keying process is used in all types of high quality connectors.
The fiber endface is not flat, the endface has a slight radius (R=60 mm).
Some ferrules have an angled type of endface. This is used in equipment with severe requirements foroptical return loss, A short chapter dedicated to this type of connectors using this principle can be
