Take ST type fiber optic connector as an example and describe the steps to clean the fiber optic connector insert.
In the picture below, you can see how to clean the collar with a paper towel.
Hold the connector in one hand while holding a clean paper towel in the other hand to wipe the sides and top of the collar.
After you have done this, blow off any remaining dust particles on the collar with dry, clean air.
Be sure to keep the canister with dry air in an upright position to prevent air from mixing with the propellant.
Never use fluids to clean the collar unless you have a microscope.
The fluid will leave a residue that you cannot see without a microscope.
It is also possible that the collar will become wet due to condensation of the water content (H2O) in the air as the fluid evaporates.
Moisture is just as harmful to the connection as dust or dirt.
After cleaning the insert, remove the protective cap from the device's optical interface and insert the connector into the interface on the adapter or board or measurement device.
If you do not immediately insert the connector into the circuit pack, do not leave the cleaned ferrule without the protective cap.
Please note that you always have to clean the collar before making a new connection, even if you use a protective cap.
Previously used caps always contain some dust or other contaminants, unless they are thoroughly cleaned or new.
When cleaning SC, FC or LC connectors, you will notice that the collar is much shorter and in the case of LC types, it is also smaller.
This will make cleaning more difficult and you must be extra careful.
