Important rules when using optical fibers.

Jul 24, 2021

The bending radius of the fiber must, at all times, be > 30 mm.

If the bending radius is smaller, the fiber can be damaged permanently due to micro bending.

When micro bending occurs, an increased attenuation of the fiber will be the result and the cable, orpigtail, with the laser or detectordiode, must be replaced.

The same happens when torsion is applied to the fiber, limit torsion to < 90/meter.

It shall be clear that, in most cases, this will result in a very expensive repair.

Remember: active optical components are, compared to electrical components, rather expensive.

· Keep the fiber as far as possible from heat sources.

Be careful while using a soldering iron during repair or on board circuit pack changes.

Note that the secondary coating of the pigtails will melt at about 95 C and deformation will be theresult. When the coating is damaged, the fiber will be very sensitive for micro bending.

This cannot be undone and replacement must follow.

When there are other heat sources on the circuit pack, like ASICS, route the fiber in a way it will notbe near or directly above that component.
