Types of multimode fiber optic patch cords

Mar 09, 2023

OM is the abbreviation of optical multi-mode, indicating the grade standard of multi-mode fiber, which is divided into OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 due to the difference of core diameter, transmission speed and distance.

OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 fiber optic patch cord differences

1, different parameters

(1) OM1 refers to 850/1300nm full injection bandwidth in 200/500MHz.km or more 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber.

(2) OM2 refers to 850/1300nm full injection bandwidth in 500/500MHz.km or more 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber.

(3) OM3 is an 850nm laser-optimized 50um core diameter multimode fiber with a fiber transmission distance of up to 300m in a 10Gb/s Ethernet using an 850nm VCSEL.

(4) OM4 is an upgraded version of multimode optical OM3 fiber, fiber transmission distance can reach 550m.

2, different uses

(a) M1 and OM2 have been widely deployed for many years in applications inside buildings, supporting a maximum of 1GB Ethernet transmission.

OM3 and OM4 fiber optic cable is usually used in the data center cabling environment, supporting 10G or even 40/100G high-speed Ethernet transmission.

3, different fiber optic design

OM1, OM2 is to LED (light emitting diode) as the transmission base light source, OM3, OM4 is applicable to both LED and LD (laser diode) light source transmission.

4, the difference in transmission speed and bandwidth

OM fiber optic patch cord transmission speed and bandwidth increases step by step, OM1

5, different functions and features

(1) OM1: larger core diameter and numerical aperture, with strong light collection capacity and anti-bending characteristics.

(2) OM2: smaller core diameter and numerical aperture, effectively reducing the mode dispersion of multimode fiber, resulting in a significant increase in bandwidth and a 1/3 reduction in production cost.

(3) OM3: using flame retardant jacket, which can prevent the spread of flame, prevent the emission of smoke, acidic gases and toxic gases, etc., and meet the needs of 10 Gb/s transmission rate.

(4) OM4: Developed for VSCEL laser transmission, its effective bandwidth is more than double that of OM3.
