Optical Module Test Procedure

After the optical module has been manufactured a complete set of testing procedures needs to be carried out. All steps in this process must be carried out and all parameters must be met to ensure that the optical module does not have any quality problems. The following is the flow of testing after the optical module has been produced.


①Light emission and light reception test

Output light power is an important parameter that can determine the transmission distance and quality of the optical module, too high or too low are not good; receiving sensitivity is to determine the sensitivity of the light received by the optical module, generally the higher the rate of the optical module the worse the receiving sensitivity.


②Eye diagram, extinction ratio test

Eye diagram is similar to the shape of the eye, is the oscilloscope on the digital signal repeatedly collected and superimposed on the results of the display, can visually reflect whether the measured signal packet loss, signal transmission is good; extinction ratio is one of the parameters used to measure the quality of the optical module, the greater the extinction ratio, the stronger the optical signal can be received to discriminate, the higher the receiving sensitivity will be. The larger the extinction ratio is, the stronger the optical signal can be received and discriminated, and the higher the reception sensitivity will be. The extinction ratio is inversely proportional to the optical power.


③High and low temperature aging test

The application environment of optical module is different and its working temperature is also different. Before leaving the factory, the optical module must be tested in the aging box at high and low temperature to verify whether the performance index of the optical module can still meet the standard under the extreme environment.


④ Compatibility and connectivity test

The optical module will be inserted into the corresponding brand of switch for testing, connectivity test, can be connected to indicate that the optical module can be compatible, the optical module can communicate. If it cannot be connected, further testing is required.


⑤ End-face cleaning

In the various testing sessions of optical modules, some dirt and scratches will inevitably appear, which need to be observed through a microscope, and only those without problems can be packaged for shipment.
