Four milestones
-In 1960, the world's first coherent oscillating light source, the ruby laser, was introduced.
-In 1970, Dr. Kapron of Corning Glass Company, USA, produced a fiber with a loss of only 20 dB/km.
-In 1985, the University of Southampton, Mears and others made erbium-doped fiber amplifier (erbium-doped fiber amplifier EDFA)
-In the 1990s, the emergence of fiber optic sheds, all-fiber photonic devices, planar waveguide devices and their integration
In 1962, the first semiconductor laser was born, followed by the successful research of semiconductor optical detector.
In 1966, British-Chinese scientists Charles Kao and Hockham proposed that glass could be used to make optical fibers for communication with an attenuation of 20dB/km.
In 1970, Corning Inc. first produced 20dB/km fiber, which marks the practical research conditions for fiber optic communication systems.
