Millicom Says Fiber Plan For Latin America Still On Track

Nov 01, 2022

A B2B fiber optic cable project linking Colombia, Bolivia and Paraguay with Argentina, Chile and Brazil is expected to be completed by the end of this year, according to Millicom.

This is part of a broader multinational fiber ring project in South America, as noted by BNamericas, which does not yet have a retail presence in Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

Millicom says that this will be the only fiber connection between the two oceans via an existing land route, and its website says: "The launch of this South American or SAM ring becomes part of Tigo Business' MPLS network (Multiprotocol Label Switching) with our Central American Ring (CAM). For the first time, our network creates a corridor that extends from Mexico to Argentina."

Tigo is the brand under which Millicom operates in Latin America.

Mauricio Ramos, the company's CEO, said Millicom will complete its Tigo Cloud project this year; htis involves interconnecting 13 Tier III data center facilities using its own cloud solution in all the countries in which it operates.

In recent years, Millicom has sold its African operations in order to focus entirely on the nine Latin American markets it serves: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, Bolivia and Colombia. In February, Millicom committed to investing $1 billion per year in Latin America over the next three years.
