Hispasat And GlobalSat Enhance Rural Connectivity in Mexico

Apr 20, 2022

Hispasat, a Spanish telecommunications satellite operator, and GlobalSat, a Mexican Internet service provider, are bringing broadband Internet via satellite to 500 rural communities in Mexico.

Hispasat has partnered with GlobalSat to roll out satellite connectivity hotspots in 500 remote towns in Mexico, including Durango, San Luis Potosí, Guerrero, Coahuila, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas and Sinaloa.

The program, promoted by the federal government through the CFE TEIT program, means that residents of these towns will be able to enjoy free satellite connectivity in these communities on their devices through open Wi-Fi hotspots in public areas.

The CFE TEIT initiative aims to guarantee the Mexican people's right to access to information and communication technologies and radio broadcasting and telecommunications services. Satellite technology will play an important role in achieving this goal, especially in rural areas.

Hispasat provides broadband connectivity thanks to the Ka-band capacity of its Amazonas 5 satellite at the 61º W. Hispasat says that with this high-performance satellite, GlobalSat and the Mexican federal government can ensure that 500 target communities have access to quality Internet access no matter how far away they are located.

The project is led by GlobalSat, which, according to the partners, has experience integrating satellite solutions with Wi-Fi technology for rural communities in similar projects with federal and state governments
