Why develop optical communication?

Aug 25, 2021

1. Fiber optic bandwidth is large

The available bandwidth of optical fiber is very large, a - generally more than 10THz; and metal cable due to the existence of distributed capacitance and inductance, limiting its transmission bandwidth as well as information carrying capacity.

2. Fiber optic loss is small, long transmission distance

The transmission loss of fiber optic cable is very low (less than 0.2dB/km), which is an order of magnitude lower than that of cable, so it can transmit longer distances, and the general transmission distance without relay can reach more than 20km.

3. Anti-electromagnetic interference and external noise

Fiber optic material is glass or plastic, are not conductive; and because there is a very thick optical cladding layer, to avoid light leakage in the fiber, so there is no mutual electromagnetic interference, but also not afraid of outside noise province.

4. Good confidentiality

Optical fiber does not radiate energy to the outside, it is difficult to use metal sensors to eavesdrop on the fiber optic cable.

5. Adapt to the environment

Optical fiber has a strong resistance to harsh environments. It is more adaptable to temperature changes than metal cables, and corrosive liquids or gases have less effect on it.

6. Light weight, safe, easy to lay
