The origin and development of fiber optic technology

In 1966, Chinese Americans Kun Kao and Hockham published a paper, which led to the concept of optical fiber, and in 1970, Corning developed the first successful loss of 20dB/km optical fiber, which began the era of fiber optic communication.


  In 1977, the United States in Chicago for the first time with multimode fiber optic successful fiber optic communication test. At that time, the 8.5 micron band of multimode light waves for the first generation of fiber optic communication system. This was followed by the rapid development of fiber optic communication systems to the fourth generation in 1981, 1984 and in the mid to late 1880s. The fifth generation fiber optic communication system reached the standard of application and realized the long distance transmission of light waves.


  Stages of development of fiber optic communication

  The first phase: 1966-1976, was the development period from basic research to commercial applications. In this stage, a short wavelength 0.85μm low rate 45 or 34Mb/s multimode fiber optic communication system was achieved, with a relay-free transmission distance of about 10km.

  The second phase: 1976-1986, this is to improve the transmission rate and increase the transmission distance as the research goal and vigorously promote the application of the great development period. In this period, the development of optical fiber from multimode to single-mode, working wavelength from short wavelength 0.85μm to long wavelength 1.31μm and 1.55μm, to achieve a working wavelength of 1.31μm, transmission rate of 140565Mb / s single-mode fiber optic communication system, no relay transmission distance of 10050km.

  Phase III: 1986-1996, this is the period of super-large capacity and ultra-long distance as the goal, comprehensive and in-depth research on new technologies. In this period, a 1.55μm dispersion-shifted single-mode fiber optic communication system was realized. Using external modulation technology, the transmission rate can reach 2.510Gb/s, and the transmission distance without relay can reach 150,100km. labs can reach higher levels.
