Optical module function failure is divided into transmitter side failure and receiver side failure, and the most frequent problems are concentrated in the following areas.

  1, optical port contamination and damage

  Due to the optical interface pollution and damage caused by optical link loss becomes large, resulting in optical link does not work. Generated by the following reasons.

  Optical module optical port is exposed to the environment, the optical port is contaminated by the entry of dust

  The end face of the fiber optic connector used has been contaminated, the optical module optical port secondary contamination

  Improper use of the end face of the optical connector with pigtail, end face scratches, etc.

  Use of poor quality fiber optic connectors


  2、ESD damage

  ESD (Electro Static Discharge), is a rise time can be less than 1ns (1 billionth of a second) or even hundreds of ps (1ps = 10000 billionth of a second) of a very fast process.

  ESD can generate strong electromagnetic pulses of tens of Kv/m or even greater.

  Dry environment, easy to generate ESD

  abnormal operation, such as: non-hot-swappable optical module charged operation; do not do electrostatic protection directly by hand contact with the optical module electrostatic sensitive pins; transportation and storage process without anti-static packaging equipment is not grounded or poor grounding


  How to determine the failure of optical modules

  1, test whether the optical power in the indicator requirements within the range, if there is no light or optical power small phenomenon.

  Treatment methods.

  a, check the optical power selection of wavelength and measurement unit (dBm)

  b, clean the fiber optic connector end face, optical module optical port, see section V for the method.

  c, check whether the fiber optic connector end face is blackened and scratched, fiber optic connector is broken, replace the fiber optic connector to do interchangeability test

  d, check whether there is a small bend in the fiber optic connector.

  e, hot-swappable optical modules can be re-plugged test. 

  f, the same port replacement optical module or the same optical module replacement port test. 


  2, optical power is normal but the link can not pass, check the link light.
