French Polynesian telecommunications operator ONATi, a subsidiary of the OPT French Polynesia Group, selected integrators Intelia and Ciena to help increase the capacity of the Honotua submarine cable to 300 Gb/s. The final phase of operations went off without a hitch in October 2022.
The Honotua International Cable, deployed in 2009, is a 4,500-kilometer submarine communications system that connects multiple islands in French Polynesia from Tahiti to Hawaii. It provides connectivity to more than 220,000 mobile subscribers, 45,000 fixed Internet customers and 16,000 audiovisual multimedia users.
The cable was upgraded using Ciena's GeoMesh solution, powered by the 6500 Packet Optical Platform and WaveLogic Ai technology, which provides 300Gb/s of information-carrying capacity over the cable system, supporting upgrades to a total capacity of 5Tb/s to quickly handle future growth. The local expertise of integrator Intelia and the operator team combined with Ciena's technology and submarine network experience helps meet the connectivity requirements of the cable system.
Romain Dhalluin, Intelia CEO, said, "This turnkey project is an important milestone in promoting international connectivity in French Polynesia and we are proud that ONATi has partnered with Intelia and Ciena to implement it."
Matthew Vesperman, Vice President of Ciena Asia Pacific, added, "By working with ONATi and Intelia, we have increased the capacity of the Honotua International Submarine Cable to 300Gb/s, creating an ultra-high speed digital highway that addresses the connectivity needs of French Polynesia.
