Mitratel Considers Increased Fiber Deployment

Jul 07, 2022

Telkom Tower subsidiary Mitratel is considering raising its fiber rollout target to more than 6,000 kilometers this year due to increased demand for fiber optic broadband in Indonesia.

Mitratel's investment director reportedly said that demand for fiber has increased and that the company has deployed 2,117 kilometers of fiber to date.  Fiber optic cable has been a focus for tower company Mitratel because of its ability to support 5G capacity - the commercial 5G service to be launched in Indonesia in 2021.  5G is the "future of telecommunications," but it requires a "suitable ecosystem.

In an update on the tower business, Mitratel internally revealed that 11,851 of the 28,206 towers are already connected to the fiber network. The 6,000 kilometers of fiber to be deployed will meet the Indonesian operator's needs for a wider rollout of 5G.
