Latin America Gets Its First Private 5G Network

Sep 20, 2022

Following the recent announcement that Nokia and AT&T Mexico have deployed what they call the first industrial-grade LTE private network in the country's maritime terminals, Latin America has made another announcement in Brazil and using 5G.

Swiss multinational food and beverage processing group Nestlé has deployed its first private 5G network in Latin America using Ericsson's Private 5G (EP5G) solution. This is the first private 5G standalone network in the region with 100% local network architecture, operating completely independent of the public mobile network.

This collaboration between Nestlé, Ericsson and service providers Claro and Embratel marks a shift from automated to autonomous plants, with the exact deployment location not yet announced.

The EP5G solution enables fast data processing - with network data transfer speeds of up to 25 times faster than 4G - and is particularly well suited to support business-critical applications that require ultra-short response times in the millisecond range.

5G's high data throughput and low latency will significantly transform Nestlé's industrial environment by changing the way Nestlé works - further cementing the company's focus on smart factories and improving productivity, efficiency and workplace safety. The project uses Claro licenses for the frequency of experiments.

Over the past few years, Nestlé has leveraged emerging technologies such as robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual reality and the operation of self-driving cars.

With a private 5G standalone network in place, Nestlé's entire digital ecosystem will become more reliable and comprehensive, enabling new innovative use cases, Ericsson said.

The private and closed cellular network will also enhance cybersecurity, with sensitive data remaining only on the plant's local network.
