Gulf Bridge International (GBI) is increasing the capacity of its international network with a fiber optic upgrade from Nokia to enable high-speed connectivity between Doha, Qatar and Milan, Italy.
Nokia's PSE-V coherent technology will enable GBI to provide capacity upgrades to its existing submarine cables and terrestrial links to meet customer demand for additional bandwidth between the Middle East and Europe.
GBI will upgrade its Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) optical transport platform with a new network interface card driven by a Photonic Service Engine V (PSE-V) digital signal processor. This will enable it to upgrade wavelength connectivity from 50 Gbps to 200 Gbps over its existing end-to-end submarine cables and terrestrial links, and enable the future introduction of 400 Gbps services.
Spectral efficiency is greatly improved through advanced technologies such as continuous baud rate adjustment, which maximizes the capacity of the two existing submarine cable links. It also eliminates optical signal regeneration over the two long-haul terrestrial links. There is no need to convert between optical and electrical signals to enhance the optical signal at intermediate regeneration points, thereby improving network efficiency and reducing latency and cost.
We will be able to meet growing customer demand for the best connectivity services between the Middle East and Europe, while ensuring we can increase speed and capacity in the future," said Gavin Rea, GBI's Chief Technology Officer. These routes are critical to our international carrier-grade fiber-intelligent network that connects service providers, cloud providers and enterprise customers to key financial and communications hubs in the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Asia."
Manuel Ortiz Fernandez, senior vice president of EMEA Webscale Business, said, "There is a growing demand for wholesale services that provide higher speed, more reliable connectivity between cloud data centers, hosting facilities and interconnection hubs in the Middle East and Europe. GBI's customers will benefit from the scale, reliability and efficiency of our optical solutions, and GBI will be able to increase network capacity while reducing network operating costs."
