Startup alternative network provider Fibernet covers most of Finland with access to 4G mobile broadband coverage. However, the increased demand for high-bandwidth, reliable Internet means that fiber-optic connections are a necessity.
Some of the more established service providers were already building fiber networks, but Fibernet decided to invest in a fiber trenching method that would allow it to build networks faster.
Fibernet selected the Adtran 10G fiber access platform to build the XGS-PON fiber network, which will connect 50,000 customers in the first phase. The platform leverages the symmetrical upload and download speeds of XGS-PON technology to help the network adapt to the growing demand for high-bandwidth cloud and streaming services in the future.
A key factor is supply availability - in Finland, the ground can freeze for five months a year. The long winter months require carefully planned building seasons and the need to deliver hardware on time during the warmer months, so the ability to order most hardware from a single vendor will help better ensure on-time delivery.
