Effect Photonics has acquired coherent optical digital signal processing (DSP) and forward error correction (FEC) technology and associated engineering teams from Viasat, announced at a press conference during the OFC conference in San Diego.
The announcement was made at a press conference during the OFC conference in San Diego. viasat has a long history in DSP and FEC technology with eight generations of design IP. effect Photonics will now own the entire coherent technology stack for all optical functions, including high performance tunable lasers as well as DSP and FEC. viasat will join Viasat will join Effect Photonics' supervisory board and take a minority stake in the company.
The move is designed to help Effect Photonics achieve its ambition of making high-performance coherent communication solutions widely available and affordable. It also aims to achieve longer-term economically and environmentally sustainable communications as it delivers high-end performance and enables communications in a smaller footprint with lower power consumption.
Customers will benefit from the acquisition as Effect Photonics will be able to optimize complete solutions for any application with existing and new possibilities, the company said. In addition, with full ownership of key optical, DSP and FEC functions, Effect Photonics is able to provide seamless integration, cost efficiency and security of supply.
This is an important step in accelerating our ambition to make coherent optical communications ubiquitous and further drive the growth of our portfolio. We look forward to welcoming a highly skilled and experienced team of design architects and engineers to join us in driving the development of coherent solutions that are energy efficient, high performance and affordable.
Viasat business area head and vice president added: "Given the trend towards consolidation in the fiber optic communications industry to provide vertically integrated end-to-end solutions, we believe that combining Viasat's assets and capabilities with the unique integrated photonics capabilitiesof Effect Photonics will create more market opportunities and better products. By investing in this Netherlands-based company, we will also further expand our presence in Europe and be able to work with Effect to bring state-of-the-art integrated photonics to Viasat's own customers.
Effect Photonics also announced during OFC that it will work with Aircision to advance the development of ground-to-ground free space optics (FSO) technology by combining the benefits of integrated and free space photonics.
