Wiring Optical Fiber Distribution Box Installation Tutorial

Jan 11, 2020

Optical fiber distribution boxes are now gradually becoming a common product in optical fiber wiring systems, especially in high-density wiring environments such as data centers and server rooms. Different from the traditional fixed optical fiber distribution box, the optical fiber distribution box is convenient for people to easily access the optical fibers in the box, and can protect the optical fibers well. In addition, the drawer type structure is also conducive to high-density wiring and good cable management. However, because the optical fiber is fragile and easily damaged by pulling, bending or squeezing, we should take extra care when installing the optical fiber in the optical fiber distribution box.

Structure of optical fiber distribution box

Before installing the optical fiber in the optical fiber distribution box, we should first understand its structure. 1U optical fiber distribution box is taken as an example to introduce its structure. The front panel of this optical fiber distribution box can be installed with 3 adapter panels, and there are two spools in the box to manage the optical fibers in the box.

1: Fiber optic adapter panel;

2: Bending radius control clamp;

3: Front panel accessories;

4: Plug and jack;

5: Bracket;

6: Trunk or interconnecting optical cable entry hole.

Optical fiber distribution box installation tutorial

In general, the installation of optical fiber distribution box can be divided into three steps: install the optical fiber distribution box on the rack, introduce the optical cable into the optical fiber distribution box and plan the optical fiber path in the optical fiber distribution box. The three steps are described in detail below:

Install the optical fiber distribution box on the rack

This step is very simple, we only need to install the brackets on both sides of the optical fiber distribution box, and then fix the brackets in the designated position of the rack with screws (as shown in the figure below). It should be noted that before installing the optical fiber distribution box, first determine the installation direction of the distribution box according to the needs.

Introduce the optical cable into the optical fiber distribution box

After fixing the optical fiber distribution box on the rack, the optical cable can be introduced into the distribution box through the cable hole. At this time, it is necessary to prepare a suitable sheath to help us guide and fix the optical cable in the optical fiber distribution box. The optical cable here usually uses pre-terminated branch fiber jumpers or pigtails.

Route optical cables in optical fiber distribution boxes

Since the front panel of the optical fiber distribution box can be pulled out, the length of the optical cable trunk in the distribution box should be long enough, as shown in the figure below, in order to ensure that when the front panel of the distribution box is fully pulled out, the optical cable will not To withstand excessive tension, the cable length between A and B should be at least 31 inches:

In addition, A, B and other necessary positions in the distribution box need to use cable ties to fix the optical cables. The movable cable ties are also used in the above picture. A single branch cable does not need to be fixed with a cable tie.

After fixing the optical cable trunk, you can start routing the branch optical cable. First, connect each pre-terminated optical cable to the adapter panel to ensure that the ports correspond one to one; then fix the optical fiber adapter panel to the front panel of the distribution box through the bending radius control clip. During this process, be careful not to Exceed the bending radius of each optical cable.
