Nepalese ISP Vianet Communications has announced the launch of the country's first multi-gigabit broadband connection based on the latest XGS fiber technology with its 2 Gbps "XGS-Extreme" package. In a press statement issued Wednesday, the company said the new connection is made possible by upgrading from GPON to 10 Gb symmetrical passive optical network (XGS-PON) technology, which offers symmetrical speeds of up to 10 Gbps compared to the 10 Gbps supported by GPON Maximum speeds of 2.4 Gbps (download) and 1.2 Gbps (upload). The new package will initially be available in select areas of the Kathmandu Valley, including Lazimpat, Panipokhari, Maharajgunj, Chandol, Gairidhara and Samakhusi in Kathmandu, as well as Jawalakhel, Ekantakuna, Manbhawan Kumaripati, Mahalaxmisthan, Pulchowk, Kupondole, Jhanmsikhel, and Dhobighat in Lalitpur. Vianet plans to expand the coverage of its XGS products throughout the valley "soon". Customers can choose from two XGS-Extreme subscription plans that offer 1Gbps (XGS-Extreme Pro) or 2Gbps (XGS-Extreme Pro Plus) connection speeds, both of which include access to the company's "ViaTV" IPTV service.
