Telecom Namibia is partnering with OMDis Town Transformation Agency to deploy new fiber in the formerly privately owned diamond mining town of Oranjemund.
The Oranjemund Core Fiber Connectivity Project is part of the operator's N$2.3 billion (US$129 million) integrated strategic business and financing plan that will provide Oranjemund town with the infrastructure needed for a comprehensive digital transformation.
Telecom Namibia and OMDis will jointly invest N$12 million in the Orange Munde deployment, with the first phase of expansion scheduled to begin in November in the town's central business district. Over the next eight months, the project will deploy 67.6 kilometers of fiber to connect more than 2,000 commercial and residential customers.
Stanley Shanapinda, chief executive officer of the operator, said, "This partnership will advance a top-tier telecommunications network infrastructure that will position the town of Orange Mound as a smart city in the near future and will help Orange Mound strengthen its position as a center for healthcare, agriculture, education , while providing opportunities for digital transformation and access to enhanced digital and value-added services that are not available in other Namibian towns."
TeleGeography reports that Telekom Namibia's N$2.3 billion investment strategy aims to increase download speeds by expanding the operator's current 10,676km national fibre backbone with new deployments.
