The Government of Oman has entered into an agreement with Australian submarine cable development company Subco to provide connectivity between the Sultanate and Europe using Oman Telecom's submarine network.
The agreement will enable Omantel, which is 51 percent owned by the Government of Oman, to provide high-capacity connectivity from Muscat to Subco's branches in London, Marseille and Milan. It will enable Subco to connect its European PoP to its Oman Australia Cable (OAC), a 10,000-kilometer cable connecting Muscat, Oman, to Perth, Australia, scheduled to be operational by July 2022.
The OAC is the first fully diversified cable to connect EMEA to Asia without having to pass through the Strait of Malacca, a narrow strait between Indonesia and Malaysia that is subject to frequent seismic activity that disrupts submarine cable service.
Omantel CEO Talal Bin Said al Maamari said, "OAC will contribute to changing the landscape of the wholesale industry and take our collaboration to a new level.Omantel is the wholesale partner of choice for OAC and has attracted an increasing number of international partners like SUBCO to work with us."
Subco founder Bevan Slattery added, "OAC is only a few months away [from serving] and having this capability to expand our business into Europe is important to further realize our capabilities and target markets."
