St Kitts Uses New Data Center For Busines

Apr 03, 2022

St Kitts and Nevis will build a new data center to boost its economy. The Caribbean nation's Prime Minister Timothy Harris made the proposal in a speech at the 6th National People's Labour Party (PLP) Convention, saying, "We will build a state-of-the-art data center here for St Kitts and Nevis."

Harris stressed the importance of the digital economy, saying the government's goal is to "target high-tech industries" to help "create new jobs for our people and improve opportunities to work away from home.

He also said St Kitts and Nevis will explore sustainable energy initiatives in the face of rising fuel prices. This will include the use of the ocean - known as the "blue economy", he claimed. Data Center Dynamics reports that the islands have at least one data center, in the form of a government information and communications technology center, located in the capital city of Basseterre. The data center was last upgraded in 2015, after suffering damage in a storm.

Basseterre has also been a landing point for the Eastern Caribbean Fibre System (ECFS) system since 1995, and Digicel landed its Southern Caribbean fibre optic cable to Basseterre in 2006 and with the Dutch government's Saba, Statia fibre optic system (SSCS) to Anguilla in 2013.
