Feb 10, 2022

South Korean telecommunications company KT will build a 9,000-kilometre submarine fibre optic cable network connecting six countries and regions, including South Korea, Japan and Singapore, to meet rapidly growing demand for high-capacity data transmission infrastructure.

The company said it will work with global real estate service provider Savills Korea to build the new submarine fibre-optic cable project.  The two companies will also work together to protect global cloud and telecommunications service operators.  KT will be responsible for the construction and operation of the new fibre-optic cable network while Savills Korea executes asset management projects such as contracting, obtaining licenses and attracting investors.

The popularity of OTT video services and the digital transformation of enterprises are increasing the need for stable operation of submarine cables.  The global OTT market is expected to reach US$1,039 billion by 2027.
