PLDT Plans To Launch Jupiter Cable System

Jul 03, 2022

Philippine operator PLDT will soon commission the U.S.-Trans-Pacific Jupiter Fiber Optic Cable System to enhance its extensive fiber optic network.

The project connects the country to the landing station at Daet in Camarines, N.B., and is expected to provide customers with more terabits per second of capacity. It will also provide cable diversity to ensure the ability to reroute traffic in the event of a subsea cable cut.

The company has high hopes for the cable system. Jojo G. Gendrano, first vice president and head of the Enterprise Business Group for PLDT and Smart, was quoted in the Business Mirror as saying, "This will cement the Philippines as the next strategic data center hub for global hyperscale enterprises."

PLDT's investment in the Jupiter fiber optic cable system adds to and enhances the capacity and resiliency of its existing submarine fiber links to deliver significant data traffic to and from the country to the United States.

Jupiter uses what is known as the open cable model. This approach allows consortium members involved in cable laying to add capacity as needed by investing in technologies that increase data throughput.

Jupiter expects to increase PLDT's international capacity to the U.S. from 20 TB/s to approximately 60 TB/s, allowing it to scale with the growing demand for digital services. such as cloud services, fintech and rich media content, complementing PLDT's existing fixed and mobile services.

The cable will also enable PLDT to increase the international capacity of its data centers and, PLDT suggests, enhance the country's attractiveness as an investment destination.

The Jupiter Cable system is a joint project involving global providers spanning 14,000 kilometers, covering the West Coast of the U.S., Japan and Daet in Camarines Norte, Philippines. it will bring the total number of international cabling systems involving PLDT to 17.

According to the TeleGeography submarine cable mapping service, Jupiter's owners include Amazon Web Services, Meta, NTT, PCCW, PLDT and SoftBank Corp. Vendors include Subcom.
