PLDT, the Philippines' integrated telecommunications giant, has announced plans to build cable landing stations and submarine cable systems. The aim is to serve the hyperscale industry, whose demand has been on the rise with the accelerated use of digital platforms.
The landing station is under construction and is expected to be completed by 2024, making it PLDT's fourth cable landing station; it will be located in Baler, Aurora. According to the Philippine website inquirer.net, the landing station "will complement PLDT's international gateway on the northern and eastern borders.
An Asian Direct Cable (ADC) system is also planned to be completed by the end of next year. The system will link the country to China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The company said it has been working with government agencies to position the Philippines as the next hyperscale hub in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also targeting the Philippines' cloud services and startup ecosystem.
Another key part of PLDT's growth plan is the 14,000-kilometer U.S.-Trans-Pacific Jupiter Fiber Optic Cable System, which, as we reported in June, PLDT recently launched to enhance its extensive fiber network.
The project, which connects the country to the landing station at Daet, N.C., is expected to provide customers with more terabits per second of capacity, as well as cable diversity in the event of a submarine cable cut.
