Openreach Has Brought Full Fibre Access To 100,000 Customers in Northern Ireland

Dec 23, 2021

BT subsidiary Openreach's expansion in Northern Ireland continues as it connects its 100,000th customer to its 1 Gbps fibre-to-the-premises network.

The company says it is on track to meet its target of providing full fibre connectivity to 75 per cent of homes and businesses in Northern Ireland by March 2022.

"We are proud to be able to connect our 100,000th customer to this life-changing technology," said the Openreach director. "Building next-generation broadband has been and will continue to be transformative for Northern Ireland.

"Our £130 million investment in overall infrastructure between 2021 and 2022 will continue to drive the build forward and open up endless opportunities as more and more customers, such as Hugh and Alison, connect to our future-proof broadband network."

"After years of poor speed and reliability making everyday tasks more difficult, using the latest broadband technology will have a huge impact on us."

While mentioning them seems a bit out of place, as if Hugh and Alison had just won the lottery rather than simply bought IT products for their business, it may indicate an attempt to humanize the full-fiber sales pitch as the company looks to increase adoption, an area where advertising jargon has historically proven troublesome.

Back in May, BT, Openreach's parent company, announced plans to deliver fiber coverage to 25 million homes in the UK by the end of 2026. This came at the same time as announcing a 7% drop in revenue for 2020, so the company will clearly want to advertise as much as possible about the gains Openreach is making in all areas of the UK and issue such news to show it is busy addressing that decline.
