NBN Invests in Technology For Faster, Greener Networks

Dec 08, 2022

The NBN recently welcomed the Australian Government's commitment to invest an additional $2.4 billion to roll out more fibre to communities across Australia. The aim is to upgrade an additional 1.5 million homes and businesses currently using fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) services to fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP). Together with the additional homes and businesses connected via fiber, the NBN is developing the FTTP technology platform to enable higher speed services and recently completed a successful lab evaluation of 25Gb/s FTTP technology.

The upgrade will help ensure that eligible customers can more effectively work from home and run online businesses, engage in online education, conduct telemedicine consultations, stream entertainment, and connect with friends and family.

NBN is deploying Nokia's next-generation Lightspan MF-14 broadband platform and Altiplano Access Controller to deliver a smarter, faster and greener network. Altiplano Access Controller is a software-defined (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) tool to drive higher levels of automation and virtualization. This deployment is the first deployment of Lightspan MF-14 in the Southern Hemisphere and will help address Australia's future broadband needs and help the company meet its goal of achieving zero carbon.

Rapid technological advances will play a key role in driving our nation's economic prosperity and enabling us to transition to a smarter, digital economy," said Stephen Rue, CEO of NBN. By leading the deployment of this next-generation technology, we can help meet our nation's data needs now and in the future. Together with our network investments to bring fiber deeper into communities and expand fixed wireless and satellite coverage and capabilities, we are helping to unlock social and economic benefits for Australia's homes, businesses and communities.

Ricky Corker, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Nokia, added: "Nokia and the NBN have been working together for over 10 years and we are excited to continue to support the NBN in its next technology evolution, deploying more advanced and energy efficient network technologies. Using Nokia's advanced fiber optic technology and our network optimization and automation capabilities, Nokia and the NBN can meet our customers' needs for a faster, smarter and greener broadband network today and in the future."
