Nokia has announced that it has successfully completed a high-speed fibre optic (25 Gb/s) trial with Hrvatski Telekom (HT), a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (DTAG).
According to a statement from the Finnish multinational, the tests were carried out at the Hrvatski Telekom laboratory in Rijeka (Croatia). The company said that this is the latest generation of optical networks, which increases download and transmission speeds to unprecedented levels, resulting in a speed of 20 Gb/s measured at the Rijeka lab.
The President of Nokia Fixed Networks said, "Now available with our Quillion-powered fibre nodes, 25G PON is a simple solution that immediately increases scale and capacity and requires only changes to the optics to operate."
Hrvatski Telekom's Chief Technology Officer said, "This demonstration shows that our FTTH network is fully compliant with cutting-edge PON technology, which will radically improve the capacity, bandwidth and quality of our broadband services in the future. By deploying Nokia's single multi-purpose G/XGS-/25G PON platform, we demonstrated the exciting capabilities of Croatia's largest fibre network, capable of being implemented at the fastest possible speed."
Nokia says 25G PON technology is ten times faster than GPON technology, enabling HT gigabit broadband access for the first time in 2007, and two and a half times faster than XGS-PON technology, which will be available for HT networks in 2021.
Depending on the optics selected, 25G PON supports both symmetrical bit rates (25Gb/s downstream and 25G upstream) and asymmetrical bit rates (25/10).
