Google's Submarine Cable Connects To Nigeria

Google's Equiano submarine cable system will connect Nigeria this month in a move that is expected to increase broadband speeds in the country and its neighbors fivefold.


Nigeria is the primary landing point for the Equiano cable, and the launch of this important milestone is expected to take place in April 2022," Google's director of West Africa said at an event with Nigeria's minister of communications and digital economy, according to Ecofin Agency, Ali Pantami.


The Equiano submarine cable will be located in Lagos, which will be the sixth international cable to connect Nigeria. Google will also execute other projects in Nigeria during the Equiano deployment.


Google's submarine cable project launches in 2019 and was originally scheduled to connect Nigeria in 2021. equiano recently went live in its first African country, Togo. This is part of Google's $1 billion commitment to help digitally transform Africa over the next five years and create 1.6 million jobs in the process.
