Equinix To Build One Of The Largest Data Centers in Colombia

Oct 21, 2022

Digital infrastructure company Equinix announced a $45 million investment in Colombia for the construction of BG2, a new international business exchange data center in Bogotá, expected to open in the first half of 2023.

Equinix says that with this new facility, it is strengthening its commitment to strengthening the digital economy in Latin America; in fact, with approximately 2,900 square meters of hosting space, BG2 is expected to be one of the largest data centers in Colombia.

BG2 will provide global and local businesses and partners with the ability to connect directly and securely to the world's digital economy through a comprehensive digital ecosystem.

Equinix describes BG2 as a state-of-the-art data center designed to provide secure cabinets and private cage deployments. The initial phase of BG2 will have a capacity of 550 cabinets, with space for more cabinets in future phases. At full build-out, the facility will provide capacity for 1,100 cabinets.

In support of Colombia's sustainability requirements, BG2 will be the first Equinix facility in the Americas to feature innovative Cool Array technology.

With plans to expand the full range of interconnection and digital services to BG2, BG2 customers will be able to easily connect directly to the Equinix BG1 Bogotá data center, which also allows low-latency routing to the Equinix MI1 Miami IBX data center, the Home Miami Internet Exchange (IX) connecting much of Latin America and the Caribbean to the world .

In addition, 11 different submarine cables land in Colombia, allowing low-latency connections to other parts of South America and to points north, including Miami.

Equinix said it has invested nearly $2 billion in Latin America since it began operations in the region in 2011, including acquisitions and expansions in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile and Peru. Globally, the company operates more than 240 data centers in 71 markets.
