BT, the British telecommunications group, says a new technology could double download speeds and increase upload speeds by an average of ten times for businesses unable to upgrade to fibre broadband.
BT claims its Hybrid Speed Boost , the first in the UK to combine a copper broadband line with a 4G network, offers an automatic speed boost, apparently by combining broadband and mobile network connections. The upgraded connection offers an average download speed boost of 20Mbps - more than twice the average download speed of a copper broadband connection. Average upload speeds can be boosted to 10Mbps - that's ten times the average upload speed of a copper line. Presumably, the exact speed obtained depends on factors such as how good 4G is in the area.
Why not just use fiber and leave even those upgraded speeds behind? This is for parts of the country that aren't yet connected to a full fiber network, so in effect it's a temporary measure until the pipe reaches them.
This is apparently part of BT's new "charter" for business customers, which is essentially a series of promises to look at the intention of the investment and the future rollout of new services.
"Using cutting-edge technology, we will be launching the first product in the UK that brings together fixed and mobile connectivity to bring faster speeds to smaller companies that may be struggling with slower copper lines," said Chris Sims, managing director of BT's SoHo (Single/Small Office, Home Office). Chris Sims said. While the Openreach full-fibre network is expanding rapidly every week, we understand the frustration of small companies waiting to hear when superfast full-fibre broadband is coming, the department said. come to them.
"Fast, reliable broadband is vital to the smooth day-to-day operations of a business, so we're taking action today to increase speeds for businesses with copper broadband - at no extra cost. hybrid Speed Boost can revolutionize the way businesses may currently struggle to handle large files, access cloud services or use HD video with the bandwidth needed to operate small businesses that may currently struggle."
Fiber deployment in the UK is in full swing, with a lot of deployment and investment money swirling around. Just today, Freedom Fiber announced that it has secured £100 million in scaled funding, and a series of similar stories have emerged in recent months as investors seem keen to get in on the action. But clearly, all this doesn't do you much good if you've set up your stall in a place where the fiber network hasn't yet reached - so it's certainly a welcome innovation for those who find themselves in this boat.
